General codeDocumented guideReviewed 4 sources

The code identifies a monitored system or condition, but does not by itself confirm a failed part or severity.

General sources explain definitions and principles; they do not confirm a universal repair. Use VIN-, engine- and controller-specific service information.

Quick answer for this code

Priority guide

Can I drive with P0087?

The code alone cannot determine whether driving is safe. The decision depends on symptoms, dashboard warnings, fluid levels, temperatures and live data.

What to check first

Save freeze-frame data, fuel level and the exact condition: starting, idle or load.

Documented selection; batch last reviewed: . It does not replace diagnosis on the vehicle.

Technical explanation

P0087 indicates fuel pressure below the requested value or monitored threshold. On common-rail diesels and direct-injection petrol engines, distinguish low-pressure supply, high-pressure generation, regulation, internal leakage and pressure measurement. A fault occurring only during starting or only under load provides useful context but does not alone identify a failed high-pressure pump.

Symptoms

  • Extended cranking or failure to start.
  • Hesitation and power loss during acceleration.
  • Stalling or protection mode when pressure falls.

Possible causes

  • 01Restricted filter, inadequate supply or air ingress on the low-pressure side.
  • 02Feed pump or its electrical supply failing to deliver correctly.
  • 03High-pressure pump, metering/regulating valve or internal injector leakage.
  • 04Pressure sensor, connectors or wiring reporting an inaccurate value.

Diagnostic checks

  • 01Save freeze-frame data, fuel level and the exact condition: starting, idle or load.
  • 02Inspect the filter, supply path and visible leakage; stop testing if fuel escapes.
  • 03Check delivery pressure and flow upstream of the high-pressure pump against engine specifications.
  • 04Compare requested and actual pressure at the fault event and verify sensor plausibility.
  • 05Have a workshop distinguish injector internal leakage from pump regulation and delivery using appropriate equipment.
  • 06Never loosen high-pressure lines as a test. After repair, check sealing and pressure recovery without deliberately reproducing an unsafe stall.

Parts involved

  • Filter, feed pump and low-pressure pipes — inspect.
  • High-pressure pump and metering/regulating valves — test before replacement.
  • Rail-pressure sensor, wiring and injectors — inspect.
